- Do you have staff signed off with stress?
- Do you have staff signed off with physical symptoms which could be caused by stress? Eg headaches, migraines, fatigue, repeated viral infections, abdominal pains
- Have you noticed changes amongst any members of your staff? Eg more reserved, more flustered or irritable, less well-kempt, less confident, more anxious
- Is someone making more mistakes than normal? Less productive/efficient? Forgetting things?
- Is someone seeking more reassurance than previously?
These are potential signs of stress in your staff.
WHAT IS STRESS?
Ultimately, stress is what happens when the demands placed upon us exceed our ability to cope. It can affect our health but also our functioning and interactions with people around us. Its impact can be enormous.
STRESS AND BUSINESS
Every year, millions of work days are lost due to stress, anxiety and depression and billions of pounds are lost to businesses and the economy. (2025 figures from Deloittes showed that poor mental health cost UK employers £51 billion annually).
Workplace impact of staff stress/poor mental health
Employees or leaders struggling with stress/poor mental health find it harder to concentrate, to think clearly, to solve problems and make decisions. They may also be slower to process information and are prone to forgetting things. These challenges can have a significant impact on their ability to do their job and operate within a team or as a leader.
Stress can affect the mood and behaviour of employees or leaders. They may become more irritable, short-tempered or tearful, and less sociable. These changes can impact on their interactions and relationships with clients and colleagues.
Employees or leaders may be signed off due to stress-related illnesses, including a variety of physical and mental health conditions. These absences can last weeks or months. They affect workplace productivity, there are workload implications for colleagues and there is pressure on employers to find temporary cover. Expensive.
In some cases, people leave their job because of stress/poor mental health, which has significant financial, time and energy implications for employers, with the loss of valuable investment into an employee’s training and experience.

Education for staff
Webinars
‘A Proactive Approach to Stress‘: This live webinar is a popular option for employers who want to educate and empower their staff in understanding stress and how to self-care. It helps them recognise how stress affects them and equips them with tools to help them minimise the negative impact of stress on their life and on their health. Duration one hour, including some time for questions, but I will be available for a further 30 mins if people want to stay and ask further questions.
Bespoke webinars can be created to cover particular stress related topics, if required.
